Graphic Marketplaces as Method To Earn Passively For Designers

If you, as a designer, have always been interested in how to make money easily with your talent, this article is definitely a must-read. Let’s explore the topic of marketplaces!

Making your favorite hobby the main source of income is probably the dream of every person. This is hard to pull off if your hobby is yoga or reading, but for artists, the task is a little easier. However, finding a client who will regularly buy commissions or other various designs from you is too time-consuming.

As a designer, I was worried about this, so I began to study the modern market a long time ago, trying to find the best way to earn money. It’s important that it allows you to concentrate on creating graphic products, reducing the time and effort to find a client to a minimum. And, it seems, I found a cool option! Namely, graphical marketplaces like MasterBundles and other similar sites. And now I will share with you all the information that I found!

Why Pay Attention To Marketplaces?

So let’s start simple. A marketplace is an online platform where goods and services are bought and sold. Such a site can be compared to a large market where you can find the same products from different brands on the same counter. The graphic marketplace, in turn, focused on various designs. They include illustrations, fonts, presentations, templates, themes, patterns, prints for clothes, and so on.  Such marketplaces themselves are just a link between the producer and the consumer.

As a rule, in order to sell your graphic design, a specialist only needs to submit the product to the platform. Form`s example at MasterBundles:

As soon as the work appears in the assortment and the desired category, it will become available to buyers. They will be able to buy the product, and the designer will get a fixed percentage from each transaction.

Thus, the specialist will be able to pay more attention to the creation of products, and the sale of works will occur automatically through such platforms. And this can be considered passive income. I don’t know people who make 100% of their income from marketplaces, but many designers can earn quite large sums this way. And that is definitely a nice bonus.

How To Choose a Marketplace?

Using a marketplace to sell your work is convenient and simple, but it’s also worth spending a little time choosing a cool platform. Unfortunately, there are many such sites but not all of them will offer favorable terms of cooperation for designers. I would recommend paying attention to the following parameters:

  1. Marketplace commission. It is clear that the platform also wants to make money, so it will charge part of the funds from each transaction. Most marketplaces take about 60-70% of the price of the product, but you can also find worthwhile portals with a lower commission.
  2. Request processing speed. The sooner your work appears in the assortment from the moment of application, the better. So be sure to read reviews on processing speed before using the platform.
  3. The quality of technical support. Each user may have questions at different stages of working with the marketplace (registration, withdrawal of funds, editing the product after unsuccessful moderation). It is important that the platform representative responds quickly to your requests and resolves all problems efficiently.
  4. The honesty of vendor assessments. Designer ratings are a common thing in the marketplace. Such tops help buyers find great specialists, so be sure to read about what principles they are compiled. For example, the MasterBundles vendor rating is calculated using a rather complicated formula, but it is quite objective.
  1. The presence of additional features. As I noticed, most marketplaces specialize in selling/buying designs, but there are those sites that offer more functionality. Multi-roles, affiliate programs, tips for promotion, and other similar things are worth your attention.
  2. Low withdrawal limit. Not everyone is ready to wait until the account accumulates $200-$400-$1000 for the first withdrawal. So it will not be superfluous to check what is the size of the minimum amount available for cashout.
  3. An assortment of popular banking methods. You should not choose a marketplace where there is no financial service that you usually use. Try to register on those portals that support the maximum demanded options.
  4. Convenient interface. The marketplace should offer a clear design of its pages, which every user will understand without spending hours or days on it.

Try to evaluate all these parameters for the selected marketplace. It doesn’t matter if it’s Dribble, Etsy, Envato, Freepik, or any other site with perfect overviews — check all the points for yourself!

A Worthy Platform To Sell Your Graphic Design

And although I have not yet placed my products on any marketplace, this will happen soon. After comparing about six or seven platforms according to the parameters described above, I selected one pretty good option for myself. It is easy to guess that this is MasterBundles, which was already mentioned earlier.

First of all, I was interested in the low withdrawal limit of earnings (only $50) and an acceptable commission. While many sites ask for about 60-70%, this portal takes only 50% of each sale. And that’s pretty fair.

I also liked that each user can combine three roles, being a vendor & a buyer, as well as you can become MasterBundles affiliate. The referral program will allow you to receive some money not only from the sale of your works but also from the promotion of other vendors` products. This is very important if, in addition to drawing talent, you have marketing skills.

In general, the marketplace itself looks very friendly and quickly responds to any user request. So I’m getting ready to present a collection of my work there in the hope of some worthwhile extra income.

Final Thoughts

The time has come to sum up! The marketplace is unlikely to be your main source of income (however, you can become a portal star with $1000+ in earnings if your products are really worth it!). However, such a platform can allow you to accumulate about $500-800 in a few months on your account. This amount is definitely a nice addition to the main source of income, isn’t it?
